2019 Colorado Better News Media Contest

Final deadline is 12 p.m. (noon), December 13, 2019.

CONTEST INFO

News Media members of the Colorado Press Association are invited to participate in the 2019 Colorado Better News Media Contest. Categories include editorial, advertising, photo and design, best website and blooper of the year and awards will be announced at the 142nd annual convention April 30-May 2, 2020, in Glenwood Springs, Colo. Category Winners: First and second place winners from each circulation class in each category will receive a certificate at the Spring 2020 convention. Third place awards were eliminated in 2015.

Sweepstakes Winners: Points will be awarded for first and second place winners in each contest category for each circulation class. First place = 2 points; second place = 1 point.
Accrued points will determine Sweepstakes winners in each circulation class for three divisions â€” Editorial, Photo & Design, and Advertising. All categories are included in General Excellence point totals. Sweepstake awards will be presented at the annual awards ceremony.
There must be at least three publications competing from the same class for a sweepstakes award to be handed out in that specific division â€” editorial, advertising, and photo & design. If not, a sweepstakes award for that division will not be handed out.

General Excellence Winners: The top point totals for each of the contest categories combined will receive the General Excellence Award in each circulation class. No points are awarded for a Sweepstakes Award. All categories are included in General Excellence point totals. In the event of a point total tie, duplicate awards will be given. General Excellence awards will be presented at the annual awards ceremony.

Duplicate Awards:

Category Winners
One certificate is printed for each winning entry. The certificate is presented to the news media organization. Duplicate certificates are available for $10 each. Duplicates may be ordered by contacting the Colorado Press Association office at 303-571-5117 or by email to coloradopress@colopress.net. Duplicate awards may only be requested by the winning news media organization.

Sweepstakes Winners
One Sweepstake award is presented to each winning publication. Duplicate Sweepstake awards may be ordered with a written request from the publisher. The publication will be billed the current market cost of the duplicate award(s) and the cost of shipping and handling. The award will be shipped directly to the publication.

General Excellence Winners
One General Excellence award is presented to each winning publication. Duplicate General Excellence awards may be ordered with a written request from the publisher. The publication will be billed the current market cost of the duplicate award and shipping and handling. The award will be shipped directly to the publication.

Award Notification
The Better BNC Contestant Manager (see details in online contest instructions) will be notified in March of news media awards. Notification will include total number of awards won per category. Places will not be announced until the awards ceremony in the spring. No exceptions.

Winners will be announced during the 142nd annual convention of the Colorado Press Association held April 30-May 2, 2020, in Glenwood Springs, Colo.

ENTRY FEES & PAYMENT

Early Bird submissions:
- $5.50 per entry.
- Entry fees must be paid online by 12 p.m., Dec. 6, 2019. Entries must be paid online through the contest portal.

Final deadline submissions:
- $7.50 per entry after the early-bird entry has ended.

RULES & ELIGIBILITY

The 2019 Colorado Better News Media Contest is open to current news media members of Colorado Press Association, including daily, weekly, monthly and online-only publications.
Entries are made by news media members and not individuals.

Members compete in a circulation class based on their proof of circulation. A member may elect to move up in circulation class regardless of circulation, but may not move down without a decrease in circulation. Members that wish to compete in a category larger than their circulation class must provide, in writing, a letter of notification to do so prior to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2019.

Note to publishers: Please carefully review your organization's listed circulation category. Your category may have changed from the previous year. If you believe your circulation category is listed in error, please contact Bay Edwards at 720-274-7173 or by email at bedwards@colopress.net immediately. If you do not see your publication listed but would like to participate, please contact Bay Edwards at 720-274-7173 or by email at bedwards@colopress.net.

Group-owned publications for which individuals produce work for more than one publication can submit entries in only one circulation class. For example, if an ad designer creates the same ad for multiple publications, that ad can be entered by only one paper in its proper circulation class. Collaborative news or ad campaign projects by members of two or more news media organizations may submit the entry for only one news media organization.

The contest period is Nov. 1, 2018, through Oct. 31, 2019. Entries that begin within the contest period, but are not complete prior to Oct. 31, 2019, must be entered in the 2020 contest (example: entries for Best Series).
